Young Charlie (Freddie Highmore) becomes entranced by four golden tickets, which promise riches and fame if they are won. Charlie ends up winning, and the rest of his family goes on a tour of the chocolate factory's secrets. (There's also a flying Oompa Loompa that acts like an elevator, but the candy goes on a giant journey throughout the ornate decor.) Charlie is then revealed to be the only child who "passes" the test Wonka sets for him, and he is invited to move into the factory along with his family.
Charlie's grandparents, parents, and the Oompas (who are on the lowest rung of the factory's social ladder) all join him after Wonka's promise to help Charlie pass the factory's test and win a tour of his factory. Wonka's propensity for trying to ensnare people with the promise of free candy takes a darker turn when he tells Charlie that the Oompas are being replaced by dwarfs. After Wonka is killed by a child (who had succeeded by putting Sour Drumstick powder in his broccoli), he's replaced by the mean factory owner Grandpa Joe, who has an all-powerful security force of pencil-pushers. When one of the kids enacts his own winnings, Grandpa Joe explains how Wonka had to re-think his business plan, which hinged on the Oompas' ruling with generosity and callousness, and that the Oompas were actually hired as spies, and their generosity was a ruse. Grandpa Joe blames the murdered Wonka and seems to be attempting to rebuild his factory with a very different team.
Charlie Bucket (Freddie Highmore), who is the only child to pass through the factory's gauntlet of candy judgment, is invited to live in the factory to serve as Willy Wonka's volunteer heir. The other four children, who have been taunting Charlie, have just been turned away by Wonka. While Charlie is there, Willy Wonka embarks on a revenge plan against the other chocolatiers who sent spies to steal his pyramid of Oompachoomps. d2c66b5586
