Homemakers were regarded as the rightful occupation for women during the Victorian era, but the American feminist movement of the late 1960s challenged this view. Women saw the house as the traditional domain of the wife and child-bearing as the woman's duty, rather than a full-time job in its own right, and felt that they should be paid for their work as homemakers, similar to their male counterparts. These concerns were reflected in the slogan "women's work is not without reward" and many women argued that women should be allowed to pursue meaningful paid employment outside the home.

This is a critical time for parents to understand their children and take care not to over-stimulate them. Though kids may be looking forward to having the entire house to themselves, parents should keep an eye out for boredom and the potential for risky behaviors. The holiday season can be a stressful time for kids, so extra attention to planning and preparation for this time of the year is key.
