This “history lesson in a book” by Thomas Morton only lasts a few minutes, but it’s worth it for the unique perspective behind it. In 1643, the leader of the free community of New Amsterdam, a port city on the Hudson River, demanded slavery be eradicated from the colony, so slaves would be granted rights like those of freemen. The Puritans, a religious group that resented slavery, governed the colony. Varying reports from the colony suggest the residents were opposed to slavery, but the Puritans weren’t listening.

If you haven’t read the book, this is a good time to discover why the author, a former New Yorker editor, named his book “Morton’s Fork: Guns, Founding Fathers, and the Epic Battle for the Bill of Rights.” Watch as Takei walks you through what this book is all about and why it’s important.

It’s worth mentioning that you get the full written book, too, of course. But that’s not the point of the audiobook. Your main job here is to listen, and this book has a few chances for you to do that.

It’s not hard to see why the Puritans would have been against slavery, considering that the Bible clearly condemned it. But what makes this audiobook so special is that it’s narrated by George Takei, the actor and one of the original crew members of Star Trek.

You’ll also want to know the full title of this audiobook: “Annals of The New York Historical Society: The Records of the Society for the Preservation of New-York Historical and Landmarks Society-Vol. 1, 1785-1829.” It’s a collection of documents written by the organization’s secretary between 1785 and 1829. These documents will give you a better idea of the society and the people who helped create it.

This audiobook has that rare quality of being able to listen to it over and over again and discover new jokes and twists. And if you haven't heard it before, there's a good chance you'll enjoy its slower pacing more than the pages of Mark Twain's original book.
